The Riesling wines of the Berncasteler Doctor site are perhaps among the most famous white wines of the world, and definitely among the most soughtafter of the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer. The name Thanisch is inseparably linked to the ‘Doctor.’ The viticultural tradition of the family dates from 1650. Dr. Hugo Thanisch, a Prussian delegate, and from 1895, his widow Katharina, are credited with having established the estate’s worldwide fame, primarily through the spectacular prices their topquality wines achieved at auction.Today, the estate is run by a Thanisch granddaughter, Sofia Thanisch- Spier, who is the fourth generation of females at the helm. The classic Jugendstil label in use since 1901 depicts the estate manor (1884) and a view of Bernkastel with the Doctor vineyard.
Vineyard Size and Grape Varieties:
All of the estate’s 6.5 ha (16 acres) are planted exclusively with Riesling.
Vineyard Sites: Berncasteler Doctor, Graben, Lay, Badstube; Graacher Himmelreich; Brauneberger Juffer and Juffer-Sonnenuhr.
Kabinett and Spätlese wines marked by a great balance of natural fruity sweetness and pronounced fruity acidity are a house specialty. The drier "Gutsweine” (house wines) and, above all, the lusciously sweet dessert wines are also remarkable.
The wines are sold in export markets and to the specialty trade and top restaurateurs. Wine tastings in the "Doctor Weinstube” in the manor or in
the Doctor cellar are possible (by appointment).
The estate is in Kues, on the left side of the Mosel, on the road parallel to the river (toward Lieser,Trier). From A-48/A-1,exit Wittlich.
