‘Geheimrat’ (privy councilor) Julius Wegeler (1836–1913) acquired his first vineyards in Rüdesheim/ Rheingau in 1882. At the turn of the century,
he bought additional top sites on the Mosel, including parcels in one of Germany’s most famous sites, the Bernkasteler Doctor, purchased for 100 gold marks per square meter in 1900.The estate and cellars were built in Kues (opposite Bernkastel) in 1901/1902. In the course of many years the estate expanded its holdings to include top sites of the Middle Mosel. Wines of international renown are produced according to the estate’s principles: low yields, selective harvesting and very gentle handling in the cellar. Today, the Wegeler family is one of Germany’s largest vineyard owners, with holdings in the Rheingau, Pfalz and Mosel.
Vineyard Size and Grape Varieties:
The Bernkastel estate comprises 15 ha (37 acres) of vines planted exclusively with Riesling.
Bernkasteler Doctor, Graben, Lay; Graacher Himmelreich; Wehlener Sonnenuhr. The Wines: The majority of wines are vinified dry or off-dry. In addition to racy ‘Gutsriesling’ (house wines) with a fine fruitiness, the elegant, concentrated, dry premium wines from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Doctor are highly esteemed. A more traditional style – wines with a natural fruity sweetness and harmonious acidity – is popular in export markets.
The wines are sold in export markets and to the specialty trade and restaurateurs.
The estate is in Kues, opposite Bernkastel, on the left side of the Mosel. From the Kues bridgehead drive straight on Bahnhofstraße and then Friedrichstraße. At the end of the street turn right to reach Martertal.
