Estate: In the early 18th century, following French rule under Napoleon on the Saar, our great-great-grandfather began to make his own wines for the first time. Today, the estate farms an impressive array of steep slate slopes around the village of Ayl. Like an amphitheater, the vineyards face the Saar River. We produce Riesling grown in Devonian slate soil along with some gravel mixed with slate in Saarfeilser. In the vineyards, we work along organic and partly anthroposophical ideas. This near-natural approach is continued in the cellar by slow and gentle fermentation with wild yeast. We believe in old vines and their deep-rooted, mineral power. In recent years, we have thus re-cultivated several historic vineyard sites and retained their old genetic makeup. A complete range of different cask bottlings underpins our claim to produce “Riesling for advanced learners.”

Wines: At our family property, we avoid predicates (Prädikat) for our dry (trocken) and off-dry (feinherb) wines, because the terroir here is clearly in the foreground.
The elegant SAAR Riesling forms the distinctive base and the central part of the classic AYLER village wines. At the top, there are the fine one-of-a-kind wines from old vines. Already at short distances, the growing conditions of our wines are affected by the wild, rugged river landscape. The quality of the best places is therefore emphasized by this independence and individuality.

Of course, we select in good years classic Spätlese and Auslese wines with power, elegance, and finesse that come regularly from the top site of AYLER KUPP. All our wines have the corresponding cask (Fass) number on the label.
